Background

Scope and content:

This collection consists of the records of BlackRose Productions, a Rochester, New York based production company. The materials date between 1987 and 1989. The materials consist of VHS tapes, photographs, production planning materials, resumes, scripts, show-related documentation, programs, and ephemera.

The photographs consist of production rehearsals of Last Summer at Bluefish Cove,Boys in the Band,A Late Snow,andMass Appeal. They also include cast and crew photographs. The photographs are in both black and white and color. They also include negatives.

The VHS tapes consist of rehearsals and public performances. The tapes are each 120 minutes.

The administrative documents consist of handwritten meeting minutes, programs, graphic mock-ups for programs, logos, tickets, and other promotional materials. As well as stage diagrams, licensing forms, cue sheets, scripts, rehearsal schedules, prop lists, office space plans, lease agreements, business cards and articles regarding BlackRose Productions.

Biographical / historical:

BlackRose Productions was founded in 1987 by three lesbian business women; Susan J. David, Joan Giuffre, and Janet Barberio, because they realized the need for innovative, creative, and diverse theater in the Rochester area. They wanted to use theater as a means of educating, uplifting, and liberating the Rochester community. The first shows The Boys in the Band and A Late Snow opened on October 30, 1987. The Boys in the Band and all other performances were shown at the YMCA Auditorium Theater on North Clinton in Rochester, New York.

This collection was donated by the Gay Alliance of the Genesee Valley, 100 College Avenue, Suite 100, Rochester, New York 14607 on August 11, 2016 [Acquisition number 2017.019].
Processing information:

This project was made possible by a grant from the Documentary Heritage Program of the New York State Archives, a program of the State Education Department.

This collection was left in original order. The t-shirt was removed from the original box and placed in its own archival box and wrapped in tissue paper. Archivist removed all metal fasteners and placed news articles in their own acid-free envelopes.
