This collection includes multiple folders full of loose recipe pages, clippings, and a recipe book. Also included are: two letters, an account book, a Methodist sewing circle meeting book, a rochester poll list, the diary of a Civil War soldier, and receipts and statements.

Background

Scope and content:

This collection contains an assortment of different papers. The first five folders are a series of recipes that an unknown person collected over the years through books, clippings, and manuscripts. Three files are in regards to A.L. Harrington who was a proprietor of the Summit House in Massachusetts in the late 1800's. One file contains the diary of William H. Powers who who served as a 1st Lieutenant in the 25th Regiment U.S. Colored troop, Company G., during the Civil War. The last three files include, notes from a Methodist sewing circle meeting, a Rochester N.Y. poll list, and various statements and receipts.

Biographical / historical:

The name Van Huysen collection was applied to the collection by the Strong Museum of Play. We are uncertain where the name originates as the name does not appear on anything within the collection. The two biographies included were the only people who were able to be identified from the contents of the collection.

Mr. Ally L. Harrington was a proprietor of the Mt. Wachusett Summit House in Princeton Massachusetts once the state acquired it in 1900. Mr. Harrington continued to rent the hotel for several more years until it was eventually rented by a William R. Howe afterwards.

William H. Powers was a 1st Lieutenant in the 25th Regiment U.S. Colored troops, Company G. Powers was mustered into the 13th New Hampshire on September 9. 1862. He left this regiment and joined the 13th regiment USCT, Company G, on March 3rd, 1864. He mustered out with this company on December 6th, 1865.

This collection was donated by the Strong Museum to the Local History and Genealogy division in 2016 [Accession number 2017.029].
Processing information:

Some of the recipe manuscripts and clippings have deteriorated and become very fragile.
