Scope and content:

This collection documents the activities of Lois Green Stone and her family. Lois Greene Stone is a Rochester, New York based writer who has been published in several national publications. The materials in this collection date from 1967 to 1990, and include event programs, news articles, photographs and blueprints of the family home.

Biographical / historical:

Lois Greene Stone is a free-lance writer who has been published in numerous periodicals and books, inlcuding many articles in Rochester, New York's newspaper, the Democrat & Chronicle. Born to Leo and Marion Greene in New York City on April 13, 1934, Lois Greene attended the University of Connecticut and graduated in 1955. She married Gerald Stone in 1956; he graduated from Vanderbilt University Medical school in 1957. Lois attended graduate school at Columbia University Teachers College. They moved to Rochester where Gerald built a medical practice, and the family established a home in Pittsford. Lois and Gerald had three children together: Alan, Sheryl and David. Lois found work as a teacher at both the high school and college level, including a period as a part-time faculty member at St. John Fisher College. She also wrote prolifically, being published widely in both local and national newspapers and journals, anthologies, and books. Besides having an extensive collection of family papers housed at the American Jewish Historical Society in New York City, Lois Greene Stone has contributed items to the collections of 12 different divisons of the Smithsonian Institution. A photograph of her was used by the Smithsonian to represent all teenagers of the 1950s in the Teen Rooms exhibit. A photograph of her playing with a ball is also used by The Strong as part of its display on the ball in the National Toy Hall of Fame.
