Scope and content:

Two scrapbooks created by Mrs. Helena M. (Langlow) Knox of Rochester, New York. The scrapbooks concern the involvement of Rochesterians, including herself, with relief efforts in the two World Wars.The scrapbook on the First World War dates between 1917 and 1918, while the scrapbook on the Second World War dates between 1941 and 1946.

Biographical / historical:

Helena Langlow was born October 30, 1887 in Rochester, the child of Stratton Coles and Mary Elizabeth Thompson Langlow. She married Paul Knox in 1907; they had one child, Stratton Langslow Knox, in 1920. The couple was known for their charitable endeavors, with Helena particulary noted for supporting relief efforts in both World Wars. Besides volunteering with the Red Cross, she was heavily involved in bandage-making efforts, including taking on a leadership role within those efforts for the Rochester branch of the National League for Woman's Service in the First World War. She was also active with the Maple Leaf Fund during World War Two. For her efforst, she received citations from France during World War I and the United Kingdom during World War II. She passed away, age 81 at her home on September 6, 1969.

This collection consists of 2 volumes.

Physical description:
The First World War scrapbook is in fair condition. The pages are mostly intact and the contents still mostly affixed to them. The Second World War scrapbook is in poor condition.Many of the pages are cracked and broken, and items have come loose from them or are beginning to do so. Photographs in both volumes are in fair to good condition; there is readily apparent silver mirroring on some of the First World War photographs.
