Background

Scope and content:

Wilma K. Smith was a Pennsylvania native whose family migrated to Penn Yan during her childhood and who attended the Rochester Business Institute (RBI) in the early 1920s. This collection consists of a single scrapbook that Smith maintained during her time at RBI, through her post-graduation life up to her wedding day. The scrapbook includes autographs from her classmates at RBI, programs and memorabilia from events she attended, newspaper clippings, calling cards, greeting cards, and business cards.

Biographical / historical:

Wilma K. Smith was born in 1903 in Pennsylvania, the second child of Clarence and Maude Smith. The family migrated northward into New York, settling in Penn Yan. Wilma moved to Rochester in order to attend the Rochester Business Institute around 1921. While in school, she lived at Kent Hall, a boarding house on South Washington Street run by the YWCA of Rochester. Following her graduation from RBI, Wilma moved to Greece, New York, where she lived with siblings. There she met Freeman Jacox, an instrument maker at Eastman Kodak. The couple married on June 18, 1926; they would have two children together (Janice and David), all the while living at 79 Morville Drive in Greece. Freeman passed away on November 24, 1962; Wilma went on to remarry with Warren H. Slocum, a retired Bausch & Lomb sales manager. They lived together until her passing on April 9, 1979; she is buried in Riverside Cemetery.
