John Lorenzo Heffron (1851-1924) was born in New Woodstock, NY and received his bachelor’s degree from Madison University, now known as Colgate University. He began his medical studies at the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Columbia University, but received his degree from the Syracuse University College of Medicine in 1881. He became an Instructor in Histology at the College of Medicine in 1882 and was a full professor of Histology by 1885, a professor of Materia Medica and Therapeutics in 1887, and a professor of Clinical Medicine in 1895. He served as dean of the College of Medicine from 1907 to 1922. Under his leadership, the school established the Syracuse Free Dispensary in 1897 and acquired the Hospital of the Good Shepherd in 1915, where Dr. Heffron pioneered methods for hospitalization of patients with tuberculosis. Dr. Heffron was the chairman of the public health committee of the New York State Medical Society, vice-president of the American Medical Association, and president of the American Academy of Medicine, Central New York Medical Association, the Onondaga Medical Society, and the Syracuse Academy of Medicine, in addition to many other affiliations and memberships. Dr. Heffron succumbed to injuries sustained after being hit by an automobile and died at the Hospital of the Good Shepherd in 1924. On Dr. Heffron, Herman G. It was due mainly to his untiring efforts that the college, in the face of almost insurmountable difficulties, was able to maintain its place in the front ranks of medical educational institutions.”
