Background

Scope and content:

The Pan Am 103 Office of Undergraduate Studies Collection contains correspondence relating to that office's role in the aftermath of the Pan Am 103 bombing. Of particular note is correspondence exchanged with the parents of the 35 Syracuse University students killed on Pan Am 103. These folders span the years 1988-1992. Intra-university correspondence sent from December 1988-December 1989 may also be found in this collection, along with general correspondence from March, 1989-1996.

Biographical / historical:

In 1988 the Division of International Programs Abroad (DIPA) was under the Office of Undergraduate Studies. When Pan Am Flight 103 was blown up over Lockerbie Scotland while carrying 35 students enrolled in Syracuse University's DIPA program the Office of Undergraduate Studies was heavily involved in the campus response. This department handled phone calls to families of the victims immediately following the tragedy and participated in campaigns to build the Place of Remembrance, to establish the Remembrance and Lockerbie Scholarships and other Pan Am 103 initiatives on campus.
