In 1988 Syracuse University's Division of International Programs Abroad (DIPA) in London was headquartered at 24 Kensington Park Gardens. On December 21, 1988 most of the faculty and staff of the London Center were at an end-of-semester gathering, which was interrupted by the news that Pan Am Flight 103 had crashed in Lockerbie, Scotland carrying many students from the program. The London Center would be at the forefront of the University's initial response to the deaths of 35 of its DIPA students in the bombing.
