Background

Scope and content:

The University College at Syracuse University Programs and Institutes Records span from 1949 to 2007 and contains brochures, programs and bulletins for the various programs and institutes that have operated under University College.

Biographical / historical:

Adult education had a place on Syracuse University's campus before University College began in 1946. Prior to the creation of University College, the School of Extension Teaching served adult students through Evening Session that started in 1918. Even before Evening Session, summer classes were offered as early as 1902. These programs helped to pave the way for the reorganization that happened in 1946, resulting in University College. Formed to help serve “adult” students, as well as working or part-time students, University College has offered a wide array of programs and institutes that support continuing education. Some examples include the Tax Institute that started in the 1951-1952 school year, Peace Corps training from 1962 to 1967, and Thursday Morning Roundtable that began in 1965. Today, University College continues to offer various programs and institutes that support student learning.
