Volker Weiss

Volker Weiss (1930-2023) was an engineering professor and administrator at Syracuse University. Born in Rottenmann, Austria, he completed his undergraduate degree in engineering physics at Technical University in Vienna in 1955. Weiss moved on to the United States, earning both his M.A. (1955) and Ph.D. (1957) from Syracuse University, where he was then appointed associate professor in the University's Department of Chemical Engineering and Metallurgy in 1960. By 1965, Weiss held a full professorship in the department. In 1972 he became Associate Dean of the L.C. Smith College of Engineering, a position he held until 1978. In 1976, Weiss became the director for the Syracuse University Institute of Energy Research. Weiss resigned from both of these positions in 1980, but continued to act as vice president for research and graduate affairs, a position he took in 1978, until 1986.

Upon retiring professor emeritus from the University in 1996, Weiss had over 70 publications to his name. During his career he was recognized by institutions such as the National Aeronautical and Space Administration (NASA), the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), and the Fulbright Program. He was involved in a number of organizations, and he served as secretary of the Solid State Science and Technology Program Committee and chairman of the College Library Committee.
