Background

Scope and content:

The collection comprises a number of materials related to the May 1970 student strike, during which time Elin was a freshman. There are also materials related to a February 19, 2008 event co-organized by Elin as a part of the S.I. Newhouse Year of the First Amendment. The event was held in honor of strike organizer and alumnus David Ifshin '70.

The May 1970 student strike occurred in response to the May 4, 1970 shooting at Kent State University. Students protested in a number of ways, including barricading the entrances to campus, breaking windows, marching downtown, and holding a sit-in in the Tolley Administration Building. The protest resulted in a four-day suspension of classes.

The collection is arranged in two series:

Media contains video interviews with alumni who were students during the strike, including David Ifshin, as well as a DVD recording of the February 19, 2008 First Amendment event.

Papers contains copies of newspapers, newsletters, and other materials that detail the events of the strike and its aftermath. The folders are organized by topic.

Biographical / historical:

Larry Elin was an associate professor of Television, Radio and Film in the Newhouse School of Syracuse University from 1998 to 2017. He additionally worked as a producer and visual effects specialist. Elin attended Syracuse University as a student, graduating in 1973. He was a freshman during the May 1970 student strike.
