Scope and content:

The Margaret A. Charters Papers span from 1944 to 2016 and includes materials related to consumer interests, course materials, her doctoral work, correspondence, research files, and biographical materials.

Biographical / historical:

Margaret A. Charters (1925-2019) was a professor of consumer studies at Syracuse University. She earned a B.S. at the University of Saskatchewan and her M.A. at the University of Chicago. After completing her Ph.D. at Syracuse University in 1973, she became a professor in the University's School of Education, where she taught until her retirement in 1995. At the age of 82, she also earned an M.S. from Syracuse University.

Charters served on the Board of Visitors for the School of Education and as Marshall at Syracuse University commencements. She was the recipient of numerous awards, including Syracuse University's Martin Luther King, Jr. Unsung Hero Award for Community Service and the City of Syracuse Parents for Public Schools Award of Excellence for the reading program she created at the Martin Luther King Elementary School. The Margaret A. Charters Education Abroad Scholarship is named for her.
