Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. was the first intercollegiate Greek letter fraternity established for African American men. It was founded in 1906 at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York. Alpha Phi Alpha Syracuse University chapter was established in 1910 and was originally chartered as the Iota chapter. Due to inactivity, it fell dormant before it was rechartered in 1949 as the 94th chapter, Delta Zeta. At some point the chapter fell dormant once more until it was reactivated in 1973.
The organization currently has approximately 900 chapters across the country, with notable members including Martin Luther King, Jr., Duke Ellington, and Thurgood Marshall.
