Background

Scope and content:

The collection includes materials from Hough’s time at Syracuse, including event programs, color slides of the campus, and coursework. Additionally, there is a 1917 edition of a book called English in Engineering that was used by Hough's father when he attended Syracuse University and was given to Hough to use during his time as a student. Also included is Hough's memoir of his time at the University, titled, “My Undergraduate Years at Syracuse: 1948-1952.” This document contains details that contextualize much of the material in the collection.

Biographical / historical:

Richard F. Hough was a student at Syracuse University from 1948 to 1952 and from 1955 to 1957. In 1952, he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in English. While an undergraduate student at Syracuse, he played trumpet in the marching band. Additionally, he was a member of the Methodist Student Fellowship and served as the student manager and scorekeeper for the varsity squad of the Interfaith Basketball League.

After college, Hough went on to serve in the Army Security Agency for three years before returning to Syracuse University to complete his Masters in Geography, studying under professors such as George Babcock Cressey. Hough graduated in 1957. From 1960 to 1961 he conducted a thirteen-month research appointment in Japan through the National Academy of Science-National Research Council Foreign Field Research Program, where he studied the effect of the decline of the raw silk market on land use and industry. He received his PhD from the University of Wisconsin in 1963 and went on to teach in the Department of Geography at San Francisco State College.
