Background

Scope and content:

The Popp Family Photographs primarily contain photographs of Syracuse University athletics teams and student activities from 1937-1940. There are two baseball team photographs and one soccer team photograph, all featuring Robert Popp. There are two pictures related to Greek organizations on campus: a photograph of Jeannette Clark and other students and members from various sororities living at Holden Cottage in 1938 and a group picture with Jeannette Clark and Robert Popp from an Alpha Chi Omega and Theta Chi formal. There is also a large group picture with representatives from Syracuse University, including Elizabeth Fox, from the 1917 Y.W.C.A. Conference in Silver Bay, New York.

Biographical / historical:

The Popp family were alumni of Syracuse University.

Elizabeth Fox (m. Clark) (1897-1980) attended Syracuse University for two years before leaving to get married in 1918. Fox was a member of the Y.W.C.A. on campus.

Her daughter, Jeannette Clark (m. Popp) (1919-2017) grew up in West Henrietta, New York and graduated from Syracuse University in 1941 with a liberal arts degree. She was a member of Alpha Chi Omega and the Chapel Choir while a student at Syracuse University. She also met Robert Popp while on campus and the couple were married in 1942. After graduation, she taught social studies for twenty years in Walton, New York.

Robert Popp (1918-2003) was born in Rochester, New York and graduated from Syracuse University in 1940 with a degree in education. While at Syracuse University, Popp was a member of the soccer, baseball, and basketball teams. He lettered in soccer and baseball. He was also a member of Theta Chi and the Intramural Council.
