Scope and content:

The Joanne F. Alper Memorabilia contains commemorative and collectable items Alper collected that showcase aspects of Syracuse University’s history related to athletics, student activities, and campus buildings. These items include glassware, a banner, pennants, tickets, and postcards, among others. Several items also commemorate undefeated and championship-winning Syracuse Orange football seasons.

Biographical / historical:

Judge Joanne F. Alper (b. 1950) graduated magna cum laude from Syracuse University in 1972 with a bachelor's degree in American Studies. She was admitted to the honorary societies Eta Pi Upsilon and Phi Alpha Theta and was a member of the sorority Alpha Delta Pi and president of Hillel. Alper received her Juris Doctor degree from the George Washington University Law School. Her career in law includes her appointment to the 17th Circuit of Virginia as a Circuit Court Judge from 1998 to her retirement in 2012. Alper was appointed to the Syracuse University Board of Trustees and the College of Law Board of Advisors, and elected president of the Syracuse University Alumni Association. In 2011 she received the Arents Award, Syracuse University's highest honor for alumni.

Processing information:

The champagne bottle was drained of its liquid for preservation purposes. Fragile items were wrapped in acid-free tissue paper and papers were placed in folders. All items were placed in acid-free boxes.
