On April 7, 2003, the Syracuse University men's basketball team won the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I Men's Basketball Championship. They defeated the Kansas Jayhawks 81-78 at the Superdome in New Orleans. The Syracuse Orangemen (as they were still known at the time) began the season unranked, making their victory even more momentous.

Coach Jim Boeheim was instrumental in guiding the team to the championship. Winning the championship title held special meaning for him since in 1987 at the same location -- the Louisiana Superdome -- Syracuse lost the NCAA title game to the Indiana Hoosiers in the last four seconds, 74-73. The 2003 win helped avenge that loss and became a defining moment in Syracuse sports history.

After the 2003 championship win, first-year player Carmelo Anthony was named Most Outstanding Player of the NCAA Tournament. He joined the National Basketball Association (NBA) after that season.

Honors awarded to the team for their achievement included a parade through the city of Syracuse, keys to the city, congratulatory resolutions from the State of New York and a White House reception.
