Background

Scope and content:

The John Conte Collection comprises photographs and other materials about Syracuse University athletics. The collection is made of two different series:

Papers includes biographical information of John Conte provided by the donors, as well as holiday cards sent from the Syracuse University football team, and a program for a testimonial dinner held in honor of Billy Gabor '48. Gabor, known as "Billy the Bullet," played for the Syracuse University Men's Basketball team in the 1940s, and later played professionally for the Syracuse Nationals.

Photographs contains images of Syracuse University athletic team members, coaches, and games. The bulk of the series is dedicated to the Syracuse University football team, but other sports such as baseball, men's gymnastics, men's lacrosse, men's crew, men's track and field, wrestling, and other miscellaneous photos of individuals affiliated with Syracuse University athletics are also included. The photos were on display at the University Barbershop, and many are labelled with the names of players and the game information. Some photographs are signed by the players and coaches pictured. Notable individuals who appear in the photos include Syracuse University football legend Jim Brown, Coach Ben Schwartzwalder, and drum majorettes Dottie Grover and Alta Burg.
