Background

Scope and content:

The Syracuse University Men's Hockey Collection comprises programs and pins related to the Hall of Fame and the Van Winkle Awards. The collection is divided into two series:

Memorabilia contains three pins given to Syracuse University Men's Hockey alumni and awardees of the Hall of Fame and Van Winkle Awards.

Programs contains programs for the Hall of Fame and Van Winkle Award Weekends as well as the 60th Anniversary of the program.

Biographical / historical:

The Syracuse University Men's Hockey Team was initially formed by a group of students as a club sport called the Syracuse University Hockey Association in 1959. This starting team would play in an informal league of other teams before obtaining University recognition in the 1961-1962 season and getting their first coach. The following 1962-1963 season would be their first season of official league play. Over the next sixty years they have continued to develop the program, and have since become one of the top twenty American Collegiate Hockey Association (ACHA) club teams.

In 2019 the Syracuse University Men's Hockey Team established the Hall of Fame and the Van Winkle Award to recognize those who had helped to establish the team and contribute to its continued survival and development. The Van Winkle Award is named after Richard Van Winkle, a player and club organizer who was instrumental in the establishment of the team back in 1959.
