Background

Scope and content:

The Syracuse University Rugby Football Club Collection comprises memorabilia, including trophies and uniforms, and tournament programs, record books, newsletters, photographs, and team schedules and rosters from the earliest years of the Club through the 2010s. The materials range in purpose from promotional to internal.

This collection includes materials that users may find objectionable due to harmful language. These materials are preserved and presented for their historic and research value. This collection also contains sexually explicit content.

Biographical / historical:

The Syracuse University Rugby Football Club (SURFC) was founded in 1969 by John Mauro and Peter Baigent. Though scrappy at first, the Club quickly established itself and by 1973 had won the Upstate Tournament. In 1980, during Mardi Gras Rugby Classic in Louisiana, the team gave itself the name still used today, the Syracuse Hammerheads.

The SURFC is a member of the New York State Rugby Conference and USA Rugby.

Gift of Barry Glickstein in 2018 and 2019 and of Rick Portine in 2020.

Please note that the collection is housed off-site, and advance notice is required to allow time to have the materials brought to the Reading Room on campus.

Due to their fragile condition and the difficulty in transporting them from their off-site housing, access to the trophies is restricted. Please contact the archivist with any questions.
