Scope and content:

The Langford Taylor Alden papers contain biographical material, personal photographs (including images of the 1904 RPI Cane Rush), photographs of several of Alden's civil engineering projects, drawings and planning documents for civil engineering projects, and two sets of drafting instruments.

Biographical / historical:

Langford Taylor Alden was born in Troy, NY in 1887. He entered Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in 1904 as a member of the class of 1908 and graduated in June 1909 with a degree in Civil Engineering. During his 46 year career as a civil engineer his work focused on bridges, harbor development, and industrial plant design and construction in New York, California, Idaho, Virginia, Mexico, Canada, and Japan. During World War I he served in the French Foreign Legion and American Ambulance Service and during World War II he worked for the U.S. Navy's Bureau of Ships. He died in Carmel, California in 1985.
