Scope and content:

The collection includes photocopies of her personal scrapbook and many of the articles she ahd written for the Saratogian, The Times Union and The Post Star. It also includes personal photos and news photos. In addition, there are many items collected by Ellen Qua from the Presbyterian-New England Church of Saratoga Springs.

Biographical / historical:

Ellen Hughes Qua was born in Bethesda, Wales on Sept. 30, 1910. She came to the United States with her family in 1911 and settled in Middle Granville, NY becoming a naturalized citizen in 1921. She graduated from Granville High School in 1928. She was a teacher for several years in a one-room schoolhouse. She began her journalism career in 1942, filling in for Blanche Robbins, a vacationing proof reader at the Saratogian. At the time she was married to a reporter, Johnny Jones. She worked at a number of newspapers as a reporter, editor and columnist. In 1997, she was inducted into the Hall of Honor for newswoman of distinction. She was a charter member of the press club. For many years she was an active member of the Presbyterian- New England Congregational Church in Saratoga Springs.
