Scope and content:

The collection consists of 6 books of minutes, financial accounting and news clippings and ephemera chronicling the history of the club and its members.

Biographical / historical:

The Ladies Reading Circle of Saratoga Springs was founded in 1890 by a group of married Baptist women; they did allow one single woman to join, Sarah Wood. The club was originally known as the Tippo Tibb Club, named after Tippo Tibb, an Arab who was a Governor in the Congo and Beyond. Once they had learned more of his background, they renamed the club the Ladies Reading Circle. The group met weekly.
