The scrapbook is in fragile condition. At some point, several commercial Christmas cards signed by a Carleton Putnam were added to the box.

John R. Putnam was the grandson of Gideon and Doanda Putnam and the son of Benjamin and Eunice Morgan Putnam. He was born in Saratoga Springs in 1831. He studied law under Hon. Charles Lester and was admitted to the bar in 1855. He married Mary Steiner in 1867. In 1887 he was nominated as a Justice of the Supreme Court and served as a Justice of the Appellate Division.
