Biographical / historical:

The town of Taylor is located in the eastern portion of Cortland County and is bounded on the north by Cuyler, on the west by Solon, on the south by Cincinnatus, and on the east by Chenango County. It was formed from Solon on December 5, 1849 and named in honor of President Zachary Taylor. The area has historically been well adapted for grazing, with butter and cheese as staple products. The first white settlers to Taylor in 1793 are said to be the family of Ezra Rockwell, who for his services in the Revolutionary War drew lot 78 of the Military Tract, upon which he located. Hamlets in the town of Taylor include Taylorville, Taylor Center, and Union Valley. In 1885, Taylorville boasted of a store, post office, two churches, and twenty-five houses; while Union Valley contained a church, store, several other shops, and a hotel.
