Biographical / historical:

The town of Solon, named after a Greek lawmaker and poet, is located near the center of Cortland County and originally embraced the territory now comprising Solon, Taylor, and the southern portions of Truxton and Cuyler. Taylor remained a part of Solon until 1849. Geologically, Solon features a number of valleys through which flow streams including Trout, Pritchard, North, Maybury, and Smith brooks. The soil in the area is generally better for grazing, so dairying has historically been the prominent industry to farmers. The first permanent white settlers to Solon were Roderick Beebe and Johnson Bingham in 1794. As of 1885, the town boasted of a post-office, one store, one saw-mill, one grist-mill, a cheese factory, hotel, blacksmith shop, and two churches, Roman Catholic and Baptist. A prominent early resident of Solon was Major General Samuel G. Hathaway (1790-1867) who served as a long-time justice of the peace, represented Cortland County in the Legislature, and was elected to State Senate in 1822 and to Congress in 1832. The stately Hathaway house serves the community today as a reception and banquet hall under the management of the Tinelli family. The Solon Sportsman's Club formed in 1951 with the dedication to promote healthy sports activities with emphasis on safety and sportsmanship.
