The Scott town records collection contains tax assessments, military rolls, school records, church records, and other ephemera related to the area of Scott in Cortland County.

Biographical / historical:

The town of Scott lies in the northwest corner of Cortland county, and was previously a part of the military township of Tully. Scott was formed from the town of Preble on April 14, 1815, and was named in honor of Gen. Winfield Scott. Skaneateles Lake borders on the northwest corner of the town, and various streams including Cold Brook, Factory Brook, and Grout brook provided the necessary water power for mills. The soil was better adapted for grazing, so farmers devoted their focus primarily to dairying. Scott Center, previously the only village in the town but now referred to as the hamlet of Scott, was described in 1885 as having a hotel, three stores, two churches, and one or two shops. Other hamlets in the town have included East Scott, Fair Haven, and Ceylon. First permanent white settlement was made in 1799 by Peleg and Solomon Babcock, and Asa Howard. The Seventh Day Baptist Church was formed in 1819, with a church building erected around 1823 and demolished in 1965. The Glen Haven Hotel/Sanitarium, home of the Glen Haven Water Cure, was technically located in neighboring Cayuga county but served patrons from near and far as a health retreat. The Glen Haven schoolhouse and library, located on the Fair Haven side of Skaneateles Lake, serves currently as the home of the Glen Haven Historical Society.
