Biographical / historical:

Located in the northern part of Cortland County, the town of Preble originally formed the south half of the military township of Tully until Cortland County was formed from Onondaga County in 1808. The town was named in honor of Commodore Edward Preble. The land of Preble is largely hilly and features a valley of the west branch of the Tioughnioga River that is nearly two miles wide. Mount Toppin(g) is the most elevated portion of the town and rises above the Little York lakes. Song Lake is found in the northern portion of Preble, and the Tully Lakes extend down into the town as well. In 1885, the town contained the village called "Preble Corners" that was situated on the Syracuse, Binghamton and New York Railroad, and possessed two churches, a hotel, two general stores, one hardware store and one drug store and various shops. Hamlets include Preble Center, Baltimore, and Slab City. The first white settlement in the town of Preble was made in 1796 by James Cravath and John Gill. Like other parts of the county, dairying took prominence among farmers, and a cheese factory was built south of Baltimore.
