The Frederic Leach Papers are broken into two series: Flat Files; and Papers and Correspondence. Series I: Flat Files – maps, blueprints, technical drawings and other oversized items. Series II: Papers and Correspondence – business and personal correspondence, miscellaneous papers.

Biographical / historical:

Frederic Leach (1846-1909) was born in Elmira, New York. He attended a private academy in Owego and was later trained as a civil engineer. During the 1870s, he worked as the construction engineer on a series of railroad including the Escanaba & Lake Superior Railroad; the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe Railroad; the Mexican Central Railroad; and the Gulf, Colorado and Santa Fe Railway. After trying his hand at mine prospecting, he headed to South America where he worked for the North & South American Construction Co. in Chile. He returned to Elmira in 1890 where he took work as a civil engineer. He served as the City Engineer in 1892, from 1900 to 1901, and again in 1904. Afterwards, he moved to Hornell, New York. where he worked as City Engineer. He died of a stroke in New Jersey while traveling home from vacation on June 18, 1909.

Restrictions:

The Chemung County Historical Society's research library and archives are open to the public from 1pm to 5pm, Monday through Friday. There is a $5 fee for non-members.
